After months of preparation, I’m so looking forward to hanging my largest exhibition to date. ‘L I G H T’ is at Saint Nicholas Church in Salthouse, NR25 7XH. This magnificent church is the perfect setting for an art show and will feature my sketchbooks alongside an eclectic mix of over thirty spiritual and coastal artworks exploring the theme of light, faith and art. 14th – 29th July. I shall be there everyday 10.30am – 5.00pm. Free entry. All welcome.
What an exciting time the month of June is turning out to be! Thank you to everyone who visited me during Norfolk Open Studios. I’ve so enjoyed meeting lots of new visitors this year and I do appreciate how much effort it takes travelling all over the county seeking out the studios taking part.
In-between Open Studios I’ve been busy adding the finishing touches to the paintings and getting ready for my second solo show at Creake Abbey Cafe in North Creake, NR21 9LF. ‘Norfolk Horizons’ openings on the 13th June and continues all through the summer until the 16th October. This exhibition features several large and medium scale artworks exploring the theme of coastal horizons.

‘H20 The Art of Wet’ 5-29th June is now on, featuring 18 artists exploring the theme of water. This diverse show is well worth seeing and my recent painting ‘Tear the Heavens Open’ has been a key piece for taking my practice further with regards to the marks, textures and tension I’ve created within the work.
Just about ready for running the first of my art workshops at Burnham Overy Staithe village hall. Both my workshops are now full but I aim to hold some more if I have enough interest – so do get in touch if you’d like to explore mixed media.
The month of May is here and I’ve been on a wonderful trip to the Algarve, in Portugal visiting the Corte-Real Gallery who are now selling my artwork and to sketch the beautiful coastline.
Since I’ve been back I’ve enjoyed several hot days sketching the light, sea and sky at Holkham beach.
Now I’m loving sorting the garden for opening my studio at the end of May.

After the reflections during the Easter break, it’s back to the studio happily creating new work for the annual Norfolk & Norwich Open Studios 2018. I really enjoy taking part is this event as it’s a wonderful opportunity to meet new and regular visitors. The free brochures are out and should be available in lots of shops, libraries and galleries around Norfolk as well as online. This year I’m enjoying working on several small scale 15x15cm paintings as well as showing a new selection of prints and greeting cards – everything is for sale! It’s March and a dramatic weather front called the ‘Beast from the East’ brought deep snow and freezing cold winds. Trying to keep the studio warm enough to work in was challenging as even my paint water froze! Despite the cold there were work deadlines looming to complete four large scale paintings 104 x 104 cm for a new gallery called the Corte Real Gallery in the Algarve, Portugal. As you can see from the photographs most of my inspiration for this month has come from sketching at Holkham beach, well known for its vast skies and sandy beach. I spent a wonderful morning sketching the horizon watching the clouds drifting by and the tide flowing in. These sketches were used as a reference to create two of the artworks which are wrapped and ready for shipping out to Portugal.
It’s been a very enjoyable journey but also frustrating at times when things just don’t seem to flow and work up how I want them! but I guess that’s part of being an artist….

February is here, the snowdrops are out and I’ve been walking along the North Norfolk coast for some quick sketching sessions.
Since the middle of January I have been enjoying working on several large scale coastal paintings. These mixed media artworks measure 100 x 100cm and shall be available at various new outlets, galleries, exhibitions and Norfolk Open Studios. Some of this new collection will be on display during my two solo shows this summer:

Expressive Coastal Art Workshops with artist Tracey Ross
Saturday 30th June & Saturday 7th July 2018 – 10am-4pm
at Burnham Overy Staithe Village Hall, New Road, PE31 8JD
This year I am running 2 exciting workshops called ‘from sketch to painting’. Enjoy a day using mixed media techniques, suitable for beginners and the more experienced artists who want to develop their work further.
The idea is to spend the morning sketching along the coastal path and around the harbour of Burnham Overy Staithe and to gain some hands on experience with sketching out in the open. If it is too wet to sketch we shall use this time working in the village hall.
Then after lunch everyone will choose one of their sketches to work up into a final painting using mixed media. There will be tuition and demonstrations throughout the day with useful tips on how I work as an artist. The aim is for everyone to have a fun and enjoyable day learning lots of new ideas about the challenges of sketching and how to take a sketch into a painting.
The cost for the day is £50 per person.
Please bring your own art materials for the day and a packed lunch. A materials list will be provided once your booking has been confirmed.
Tea, coffee, cold refreshments and biscuits will be available.
All workshops need to be paid in full beforehand and any fees will not be refundable in the event of a student’s non-attendance.

Capturing Wintry Light!
Norfolk is famous for its vast skies and stunning light and the winter season has so much to offer even on a very dull day! Mixing tones of various greys using Paynes grey, Ultramarine blue, Titanium White and a hint of purple does wonders for capturing the coastal light over the marshes. This painting ‘Salty Marsh Sky’ shows how I’ve used these colours to depict a winter sky over the marshes at Stiffkey. By working quickly and applying layers of thin paint either with a brush or palette knife an interesting sky effect can bring the drama of the sky to life!
October has been mild and sunny and the vibrant kaleidoscope colours of autumn are having an impact on my recent sketches and paintings. The stunning plum and blackberry colours contrast well with the spectacular shades of moss and golden greens. One of the best ways to mix greens is by using two colours: Paynes Gray and Yellow, I love using a Lemon Yellow. See below for a quick demonstration showing the various colours achieved using just Paynes Gray and three yellows. All the colours used are acrylics.
