‘Brighter Days – Wells’ this painting is going to a new gallery in June. It’s seems like it’s been a cold spring especially, as last year at this time it was very hot and sunny. In the studio the work continues to thrive, moving paintings over the finishing line has been the main focus. Next it’s signing, finding suitable titles, giving each painting a stock number, then finally giving them two coats of Winsor & Newton satin UV varnish.
I don’t know about you but sometimes I feel all over the place… and this month feels like no exception! What with a family wedding and a new building extension being added to our cottage, my time in the studio has been challenging.
Experimental mark making for the waving reeds at Salthouse.Nearly finished!
However, even without hours and hours of dedicated studio time – it seems that by just turning up, mixing the paint and applying it – things slowly begin to happen and this is the exciting part of being an artist!

“Thank you so much for a very informative, useful and enjoyable workshop. I learnt a great deal, which I can put into practice in my paintings in future. Using acrylics with mixed media was totally new to me and I really enjoyed pushing myself to experiment outside my comfort zone.” J. Linney 2023
I have attempted to make this months inspirations post several times but each time something went wrong and it did not publish…
This month I’m looking for new inspiration and there is nothing better than a walk along the coast, as even in winter a bit of sunshine can lift the dullness. This photo was actually taken last autumn but I love it for it’s winning colour combinations of orange and blue.
New ideas forming in the studio – this month I’ve been planning out my year with some goal setting and some different ways of working. More of this to follow…
December – how can that suddenly be the end of the year! This is a good time to look back and reflect on how the year has been for your art business. I am part of a lovely community of artists called the Connected Artist Club which is run by Alice Sheridan. You can look her up on Instagram @alicesheridanstudio and this is something that Alice shares in her membership. But you can do this yourself by looking back through your diary and social media posts such as Instagram or even your photos on your mobile and write down what happened each month in a notebook. I bet you have achieved far more than you thought you had!
This year I had the opportunity to work on several commissions. In the spring Birketts approached me to create a collection of seascape paintings for their newly refurbished offices in Norwich. Below is a photograph of me delivering one of the paintings to the Brancaster Boardroom.
